Ebolapox: Death of Humanity

The Soviet Union had a major biological warfare agency in the 1970s. This agency, known as Biopreparat, is a network of secret laboratories, each one focused on developing different deadly bioagents (or biological weapons). Biopreparat had about 30,000 employees all of which are dedicated to researching and developing pathogenic weapons for use in a possible major war, more or less a preparation for World War III. One of the most deadly biological weapon developed was a hybrid of the fatal Ebola virus and the highly infectious Smallpox virus: Ebolapox.

Ebola Virus

Ebola Virus (EBOV) is a very dangerous virus which causes extremely severe diseases in some primates and humans. All people infected with this virus shows coagulopathy, a condition where the body's natural blood clotting mechanism is impaired - thus resulting to hemorrhages. Internal bleeding is usually the cause of death, with a possible 90% chance that a person infected will die. There are ongoing efforts in developing a vaccine but as of 2014, none exists.

Smallpox Disease

Smallpox is one of the most infectious disease known to this date. It is an ancient disease believed to have emerged in human populations at around 10,000 BC. Like Ebola, Smallpox is also very deadly (but at a lower extent) with a 35% chance that an infected person will die. This disease was responsible for an estimated 300-400 million deaths in the 20th century.

Although very deadly, the crowning ability of Smallpox is its extreme virality. Smallpox is known to survive in any environment all throughout the world, from hot countries like India and Egypt, to cold climates in Europe, China, and Japan. It is also very infectious - it can be transferred via air, water, and solid food. It can also transfer within 6 feet from one person to another.

After vaccination campaigns in the 19th and 20th century, the World Health Organization declared smallpox as eradicated - meaning it no longer possess the risk to become an outbreak.

Ebolapox: The Ultimate Virus

One of the hybrid diseases developed in the Soviet Union's Biopreparat, Ebolapox combines the high fatality rate of Ebola and the ability of Smallpox to rapidly spread. Russia denies having a stock of this virus, however, some Russians who defected to Europe and the United States, stated that there still Biopreparat laboratories existing possibly containing the Ebolapox.

Like in the 1800s case of Smallpox, it is believed that when Ebolapox is released, it can kill 1/3 of the human population, and if a vaccine (or natural human resistance) is not developed, humanity will succumb to this disease.
